Great tutorial. Especially helpful when it comes to doing the shadows, and the very detailed portion on the eyes was VERY helpful. Thank you so much!

This tutorial is probably one of the most helpful, in terms of painting, for me, that I have found so far.
Would you be willing to link to the brush used in this? :o

Thank you so much for this! I used it to paint a portrait (I'm just a beginner, and had no idea where to start), and I'm happy with the way my first effort turned out. I still need practice, but this worked out really well! :)

Do you 'merge layers' each step you create this?

Yes you can merge layers between the steps. once you get more comfortable with it your more likely to use fewer layers.

I don't use photoshop but use PaintToolSAI, and a mouse, no graphic tab.

Either way, this tutorial was helpful with shading parts of the face.

Thanks~!

I tried to do this and mine turned out horrible. Looked like something that a five-year-old could've done. *sigh*

I guess I just don't possess the artistic talent in drawing or painting faces. Guess I'll just stick to landscapes-- even though I'm not particularly good at that either.

Very good tutorial, really helpful ^^ And a very beautiful piece of art as well. But I'd like to ask something: What happened to the sketch? You said it wouldn't be visible in the final product, but you never blended it in or anything?

Oh the sketch is on a seperate layer so it's just a matter of deleting that layer or if you like the look of still having the lines you can just change the opacity to suit the look your going for.

This is awesome! I'd been using the smudge tool to blend, but everything comes out so dead looking. I'll have to try your method now.

i love how you really went into detail with the specific contours of the face, and eyes especially, those are the details that really make it pop, in my opinion. thank you so much!

Incredible. I like how you don't use Photoshop specific tools so people who use Sai (like me) can still use similar techniques and brushes and get similar effects. You did an excellent job on this one -- I have a really hard time getting lighting/shading and the flush-red parts to look right, so this will really help me a lot. Thank you. :D
